How did we find ourselves here? Who were the first humans to put on a mermaid tail and dive into the world we now know so well. Mermaid Raina explores the history of the modern mermaid, not in myth or legend, but the real life performers, innovators and stars who built the community into what it is today. This lecture will cover entertainers, tail-makers, personalities and new waves that shaped the seas for modern merfolk.
About Raina the Halifax Mermaid
Raina owns and runs the award winning company Halifax Mermaids, a subsidiary of Canadian Mermaids Inc. Raina was one of the first batch of professional mermaids in Canada getting her start in late 2008. Raina is also recognized internationally as a pioneer in the mermaid community when it comes to working with children and educating others.
Based in Canada; Raina and her company provide environmental education, entertainment for all ages, tourism events, birthday parties, seminars, corporate events, underwater performing and filming, and advocacy work with volunteering. Raina has also been involved in multiple conventions including planning and facilitating the 2017 record breaking "NC Mermania".
Raina believes that people - especially children- learn the best through play experiences. Her company provides "edutainment" moments where kids and parents can tap into their imagination and uncover useful skills, new information, and build lasting memories. Raina has a degree in child and youth development, and a degree in education along with her Nova Scotia teaching license.

Also an ambassador for Finfolk Productions, he takes pride in being a voice for BIPOC in the industry and creating the representation he wishes there was more of. You’ve seen them in films such as Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters, the Harry Potter-world of Fantastic Beasts - The Crimes of Grindlewald, of course The Water Horse and even very recently in Frozen 2. These enigmatic and fascinating creatures while related to each other, absolutely have their own unique, geographical origins and physical attributes. From a merman’s perspective, we will be primarily discussing the differences between Hippocampi and Kelpies, as these are the two species that are most often confused with each other. Where do these creatures live? What do they look like? Are they dangerous or are they friendly? Please join Merman Jax as we whimsically dip our toes in the water with these magnificent and aquatic steeds. Just make sure a Kelpie isn’t lurking around…
